3) Development of standards
KTC is taking a leading role in developing international/national/group standards in the fields of the 4th Industries and Smart City as the COSD of the government.
  • KTC is operating a total of 18 specialized standard management committees in the field of electricity and electronics, covering multi-media (TC100), home appliances (TC61), and more.
  • The functions of standards
    • First, standards are an important means to enhance social and economic efficiency. Standards increase the production efficiency in all steps in producing products or services from raw materials or resources while protecting the consumers and providing them with better qualities. Recently, the standards are expanding the scopes from products to logistics, software, services, and other industries. Now, they are recognized as the means of innovation critical for the economy and society of the 21st century, which is an informationized and aging society.
    • Second, standards are the basis of the development of industries. The standardization of a technology of a high level of integrity will enhance the competitiveness and market relevance of application products. Especially, the preemptive standardization of new technologies that are used in information technologies, multi-media, HDTV, and DVD, becomes the basis of the development of advanced technologies, prevents overlapping investment in technologies, and plays an essential role in transferring technologies.
    • Third, standards are the basis of trade growth and free trade. Conformance with international standard and national standards will promote mutual recognition between countries, facilitate the growth of trade volumes, and integrate the economy. The WTO/TBT convention (Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade) requires that, in order to prevent technical regulations from being barriers in trade, when a new national standard is to be adopted (including technical regulations), an international standard is to be adopted first, if there is one.
  • Key projects
    • Development of international standards for the evaluation of the performance of displays to enhance the performance of digital devices.
      - Performance evaluation of TV products without speakers and foldable smartphones.
    • IEC international standard development project (2019 and on)
      - Participating organizations: Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Samsung Display, and LG Display
    • The development of the WPT efficiency measurement methods and long-distance RF WPT international standards for leading the wireless power transmission technologies and proliferation of the industry
      - The development project for the international standard for RF wireless power transfer and wireless charger efficiency (2018 and on)
      - Participating organizations: Korean Intellectual Property Office, ETRI, and KETI
4) Smart City
A smart city is a combination of physical city construction with ICT technologies, including IoT, to provide efficient urban services. The market for this industry is growing very fast, by utilizing the new technologies such as AI, big data, 5G, and other IT technologies, as one of the 13 innovation driving forces and eight innovation growth engine, to become the centerpiece of the areas of energy, transportation, and safety.
