The Korea Testing & Research Institute for Mechanical-Electrical-Electronic Industries (KTC, Director Ahn Seong-il) announced on the 21st that it is pushing forward with the creation of a 'Hydrogen and Defense Testing and Certification Support Center' in Changwon, Gyeongnam, a hub for South Korea's hydrogen and defense industries.
Recently, KTC held a business meeting with Changwon Special City to discuss the architectural plans for the KTC Yeongnam Regional Testing and Certification Support Center (tentatively named Changwon Center), deliberating on site selection and subsequent procedures.
As a result, they agreed to pursue the construction of the Changwon Center on a site in the expanded industrial district of Seongsan-gu, Changwon City, in the latter half of this year.
Upon final decision on the construction of the Changwon Center, KTC plans to sequentially develop facilities starting with a hydrogen reliability testing site, followed by basic material and environmental testing labs.
Last year, KTC identified 13 major future growth industries, including hydrogen and defense, and has been actively pursuing related projects. Notably, in November last year, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Changwon City, a hub for the national hydrogen and defense industries, to explore business expansion through linking local specialized industries with KTC's strategic sectors.
Following this, KTC agreed with Changwon City to establish the Changwon Center, continuing mutual cooperation to enhance competitiveness in the hydrogen and defense sectors.
Currently, KTC has 12 domestic hub centers in Gunpo (headquarters), Bundang, Seongnam, Poseung, Asan, Gokseong, Samcheok, Eunseong, Ochang, Daegu, and Yangsan. The decision to establish the Changwon Center will increase this number to 13.
KTC plans to relocate the hydrogen and defense equipment and expertise currently distributed between the Gyeongbuk (Daegu) and Gyeongnam (Yangsan) centers to the Changwon Center and further build infrastructure for new business initiatives, concentrating its capabilities.
Furthermore, KTC intends to nurture the Changwon Center as a specialized Yeongnam regional testing site for the hydrogen and defense industries.
Director Ahn Seong-il of KTC stated, "The Changwon Center will serve as a bridgehead for entering new businesses in the hydrogen and defense sectors. We will continue to seek competitive and cooperative development by linking the 13 strategic industries with Changwon City's specialized local industries."
